Why photography?
This question seems simple, its deep, and such a great question! As my photography business continues to take off, I am constantly making sure I stay true to my “why”.
As a small business owner, working mom (outside of my photography business) with two littles, and a wife, I always want to stay grounded and intentional with my purpose in this industry.
I’ve hinted at my motivation in past blogs, but with the new year and all the new faces we have here (hey, by the way!), I thought this would be the perfect time to dive into it deeper, because it 100% affects how I capture my sessions for you in the best way!
Let’s start with my motivation. My motivation and interest in photography begins with my littles. As I mentioned earlier I am a mom to two beautiful children. My almost four year old daughter is Ryleigh, and my one year old son is Garrett. Their initials are purposefully in my business name (RG) so that every session booked, every invoice, every gallery, and anything else that gets sent out, I keep my focus on my reason. I never want to lose focus, and I believe that’s what makes my sessions so special!
Freezing the moment
When I became a mom myself, everyone warned how fast time moves. I thought I had prepared myself for it, but phew... there’s no preparation for blinking and your newborn is now four years old asking for a Barbie house or your littlest one is learning and accomplishing something new. You feel so torn between wishing they would stay little forever and being so proud of them for accomplishing new things.
Your mama heart sometimes wishes to go back in time, and that’s just not physically possible. But, photos have stories to tells and have a way of transporting back to some of the most precious moments of your life. I like to think of them as magic that heals, treasures and cherishes the past.
Last week, I found myself, looking at a photo of my son yesterday that popped up on my memories from a year ago. I was holding him up and he was just beaming from ear to ear at me. Especially now that he’s such a daddy’s boy and not a big fan of mama’s snuggles… major eye roll, that picture transported my right back to that place and time when he was roughly 4 months old. The love and joy filled my heart and it was a super sweet moment. Lately, I have been missing the baby snuggles so much, and that photo took me back to that moment in time and I could almost feel exactly what those snuggles felt like.
Pictures aren’t just pictures, they are memories that bring joy, healing, life, and love into our hearts when we come across them. They have the power to connect us to our emotions and our past in a way that nothing else can.
Sharing my gift
I knew one day, I wanted to take that outside of my family and capture stories just like that for others. When you have a passion, keeping it inside doesn’t let your passion live out to its fullest potential.
I joke with my clients that I had to make by business professional because my daughter’s tired of me taking her pictures, and while that’s true, that’s not truly why I began this professionally.
There is something special beyond words to be a storyteller for family’s, seniors and everyone in between. Life changes, kids grow, seniors graduate, and the baby you just welcomed into the world starts toddling around. Each moment in your life has a story attached to it. While some stories are full of happiness, there's others that have some sadness attached to it. Like I mentioned earlier, photos are magic. They have a way to speaking to you and telling your story in an authentic way that you need in each moment. They remind you of the feeling of your toddler's hug, bring healing when you're grieving a moment of your life, and make you smile on a day you need a smile. Such a "small" picture on the wall has "huge" memories filling our hearts.
I love the thought of you walking through your hallway, and you come across a picture from our session several years prior. When you see that photo, you are transported right back to our session where love-filled and authentic memories were made during that precious chapter of your life. Chaos may surround you, but there's peace filling your heart.
I may not be able to build a time machine, but I do capture pictures that have stories attached to bring you back to this moment in your life. That is such a cool, special gift that I will never take for granted.
