As I sat down this morning, ready to edit a session and work through my to-do list, I found myself staring blankly at my screen. My heart wasn’t in it. I couldn’t stop thinking about the tragedy that occurred in Chatham, IL, just 20 minutes from where I live and work.
I thought about the children who witnessed the unthinkable, the fear and confusion they must be carrying. I thought about the parents who are unsure how to explain this to their little ones. I thought about the families who are grieving a loss no one should ever face.
Then I thought of my own kids. We rushed out the door this morning. My husband and I hurried off to work, the usual hustle. Did I hug them tight enough? Did I say “I love you” with enough intention? Did they feel, without a doubt, how much they mean to me?
Tragedy has a way of snapping life into perspective.
So today, instead of sharing photography tips or personal updates, I’m sharing a simple, heartfelt prayer for the Chatham community and all those affected.
A Community Prayer for Chatham, IL
Lord,
There are no words that feel big enough or strong enough to match the heartbreak in Chatham. The pain is heavy, the loss unimaginable.
I lift up the children whose lives changed in an instant. May their fear be met with safety, comfort, and healing. Surround them with love and protect their peace.
I pray for the parents explaining the unexplainable to their little ones. Give them strength and wisdom to help their children grieve.
I lift up the families who lost their babies, whose pain is beyond words. Those that are crying for their babies as if nothing had happened. May they feel the community’s love surrounding them. May they find moments of peace, even in their sorrow.
I pray for the first responders, including my cousin, who ran toward the pain. Give them space to process what they witnessed, and strength to carry on. May they feel our deep gratitude for their courage.
I pray for every parent who held their children tighter last night, whispering thanks through tears and asking, “What if?”
May we never take a single moment for granted. May we live and love with intention. As we walk through the coming days, weeks, and months, may we remember the families grieving and continue to wrap them in our thoughts and prayers.
